PARENTS’ BLESSINGS IN A CHILD’S LIFE
Bismillāh.
It is important for us as Muslims to understand that the blessings and righteous influence of parents can shape a child’s life in this dunya and, by the permission of ALLAH Azzawajal, contribute to their success in the Ākhirah.
A child does not need only food, clothing and education. They also need sincere du‘ā, love, guidance, a good example and the righteous support of their parents.
ALLAH Azzawajal says:
“And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and that you be excellent to parents.”
(Qur’an 17:23)
A parent’s sincere du‘ā for their child is something powerful. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Three supplications are answered without doubt: the supplication of the oppressed, the supplication of the traveller, and the supplication of the parent for his child.”
(Abu Dawud, at-Tirmidhi)
Parents, therefore, should never underestimate the power of their words. A mother’s du‘ā, a father’s du‘ā, their encouragement, forgiveness and righteous example can become a tremendous source of blessing in a child’s life.
At the same time, parents should be careful with their tongues. Do not constantly curse your children, humiliate them or tell them, “You will never become anything.” Instead, make du‘ā for them, correct them with wisdom and remind them that ALLAH Azzawajal loves those who turn back to Him.
And remember: one of the greatest gifts a Muslim parent can give a child is not wealth—it is a strong relationship with ALLAH Azzawajal.
Teach them Ṣalāh. Teach them the Qur’an. Teach them good character, modesty, honesty, kindness and obedience to ALLAH Azzawajal. Most importantly, let them see Islām in your character and actions before you demand Islām from them.
And when you are gone from this world, your child may still raise their hands and say:
“O ALLAH, forgive my parents and have mercy upon them.”
What a beautiful legacy!
May ALLAH Azzawajal make our children righteous, protect them from every evil, make them the coolness of our eyes, and allow their righteous deeds and sincere du‘ā to benefit us even after we return to Him. Āmīn.
