ENCOURAGING ONE ANOTHER TOWARDS GOODNESS, NOT CONSTANT CRITICISM
BismilLah.
As Muslims, we should ask ourselves:
Am I helping the people I love become closer to ALLAH Azzawajal, or am I only pointing out their weaknesses?
ALLAH Azzawajal says:
“And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and transgression.”
Qur’an 5:2
Sometimes, our husband, wife, children, parents, or friends may develop a bad habit, become weak in their worship, delay their Salaah, stop going to the Masjid, dress inappropriately, or become distracted by the dunya.
Our responsibility is not simply to criticise them. Rather, we should lovingly encourage them towards what pleases ALLAH Azzawajal.
A wife can lovingly say to her husband:
“My dear, can you please go to the Masjid? I want you to earn the reward of praying in congregation.”
A husband can gently encourage his wife:
“My dear, let us protect our Salaah and make sure we pray on time. Let us also dress in a way that pleases ALLAH Azzawajal.”
Parents should encourage their children to pray, tell the truth, respect others, give charity, help the needy, read the Qur’an, and develop good character—not merely because they want praise from people, but because they want ALLAH Azzawajal to be pleased with them.
And when someone falls into a bad habit, do not humiliate them. Help them overcome it. Remind them with wisdom. Make Du‘aa for them. Lead by example. Celebrate their progress and continue encouraging them.
The Prophet ï·º said:
“Religion is sincere advice.”
(Sahih Muslim)
But sincere advice should be given with wisdom, mercy, kindness and love.
Remember: constant criticism can make someone defensive, while sincere encouragement can open their heart.
A beautiful Muslim family is not a family where nobody makes mistakes. It is a family where, whenever someone falls, the others help them get back up, and together they continue walking towards ALLAH Azzawajal.
Let us become husbands and wives who strengthen each other's Eemaan. Let us become parents who raise children who love obedience to ALLAH Azzawajal. Let us become friends who remind one another of the Aakhirah.
And let our motivation always be:
“I want you to become better—not for me, not for people, but for the sake of ALLAH Azzawajal.”
May ALLAH Azzawajal make our spouses, children, parents, families and friends a means of increasing our Eemaan, correcting our weaknesses and bringing us closer to ALLAH Azzawajal. Aameen.
