FAJR REMINDER: *ABU BAKR'S UPRIGHTNESS*
By: Umm Affān
Dhul-Hijjah 24, 1443 (23-July-2022)
What can you say about a man who is not only upright in Jahiliyyah (Period of Ignorance) but also in Islām? Perhaps that was why embracing Islam became easy for him. In the book Makārim al-akhlāq (83), Al-Hāfidh Ibn Abi Dunya (Raḥimahullāh) said: *“There is no good manner or beautiful action except that Allāh has connected it to Islam.”*
A'ishah (RadiyaLlāhu 'Anha) said: *“By Allāh, never did Abu Bakr chant poetry, whether in Islam or Jahiliyyah. He and 'Uthman abhorred drinking intoxicants in Jahiliyyah.”* She also said: *“Abu Bakr had made intoxicants forbidden for himself even in Jahiliyyah.”* This was our mother presenting her father; Abu Bakr to us. Were it to be you, what can your son or daughter say about you? Do you drink liquor? Do you commit Zina? Can they boldly say, “This is who our father is!”?
The discussion this morning is about the best of this Ummah (the Muslim Nation) after Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). He is AbduLlāh Ibn Abi Quhafah Ibn Aamir Al-Qurayshi At-Taymi popularly called Abu Bakr As-Sideeq (RadiyaLlāhu 'Anhu). He was brought up with decent and good parents, thus he gained great self-esteem and noble status. His father 'Uthman, popularly known as Abu Quhafah (RadiyaLlāhu 'Anhu) accepted Islām on the Day of Victory in Makkah. His mother Salma Bint Sakhar, also known as Umm Al-Khayr (RadiyaLlāhu 'Anha), embraced Islam early and migrated to Madinah.
Abu Bakr (RadiyaLlāhu 'Anhu) was born two years and some months after the birth of the Prophet (ﷺ). Imām An-Nawawi (RahimahuLlāh) said: *“He was from the chiefs of the Quraysh in Jahiliyyah and one of their consultants. He was loved by them and was the most learned. So when Islām came, it affected him more than anything else and he entered into it completely.”*
To be continued, Allāh willing. I beseech Allāh to be Especially Merciful to AbduLlāh Ibn Abu Quhafah. (Aameen)
