*DU‘Ā, THE ESSENCE OF WORSHIP*

*EPISODE 5⃣: Some reasons behind no/delayed response*

One of the greatest trials a Muslim can face is to make du‘ā without getting a response in any form. Some reasons for that shall be mentioned below In'Shaa'Allaah.
1️⃣ When the du‘ā is for something which is forbidden.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: _*"A person's du‘ās will continue to be answered so long as he does not pray for something sinful or for the breaking of family ties."*_
(Muslim, 7705)
2️⃣ Not commanding good and forbidding evil.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: _*"By the One in Whose Hand is my soul! Either you command good and forbid evil, or Allaah will soon send upon you a punishment from Him, then you will call upon Him, but He will not respond to you."*_
(Tirmidhi 2169)
3️⃣ Sinning.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: _*"A man is deprived of provision because of the sins that he commits."*_
(Ibn Maajah, 4022)
4️⃣ Consuming haraam wealth.
This is one of the major things that prevent du‘ās from being answered.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: _*"O people, Allaah is Good and only accepts that which is good..."*_
_*"Then he mentioned a man who has travelled on a long journey and is dishevelled and covered with dust; he stretches forth his hands to the heaven, (saying) O Lord, O Lord, but his food is haraam, his drink is haraam, all his nourishment is haraam, so how can he du‘ā be accepted?"*_
(Muslim, 1015)
The man described had some of the characteristics which help du‘ās to be answered, but the fact that he consumed haraam wealth prevented his du‘ā from being answered.
5️⃣ Being hasty.
The Prophet (ﷺ): _*"The du‘ā of any one of you will be answered so long as he is not impatient and says, I made du‘ā but it was not answered."*_
(Muslim, 7705)
6⃣ Making the du‘ā conditional.
The person who makes du‘ā has to be resolute in his supplication and not try to give conditions for his du‘ā to be answered.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: _*"None of you should say, O Allaah, forgive me if You will, O Allaah, have mercy on me if You will. Let him be resolute in the matter, whilst knowing that no one can compel Allaah to do anything."*_
(Al-Bukhari 6339)
7⃣ A delay in response is a trial.
A delay in response to a servant's du‘ā may be a trial by his Lord, and trials bring a servant closer to Allaah. This requires the servant to be patient, so he may pass the test given to him by his Lord.
8️⃣ Allaah substituted the servant's request for something better.
Allaah is the Al-Hakeem, Most Wise and Al-'Aleem, the All Knowing. Allaah may have not responded to the du‘ā because He knows it might bring about evil to the servant, or because it might hinder better things from coming to the servant, or because He, in His infinite wisdom and knowledge, knows and wants something better for the servant.
Allaah (ﷻ) said:
*"...وَعَسَىٰٓ أَن تَكْرَهُوا۟ شَيْـًٔا وَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ ۖ وَعَسَىٰٓ أَن تُحِبُّوا۟ شَيْـًٔا وَهُوَ شَرٌّ لَّكُمْ ۗ..."*
*"...But it is possible that ye dislike a thing which is good for you, and that ye love a thing which is bad for you..."*
(Al-Baqarah, 2:216)
If a servant doesn't receive a response to his du‘ā, he should not lose hope, but rather check himself and correct his faults. And Allaah never forsakes His servants.
The Prophet (ﷺ): _*"There is no Muslim who calls upon Allah, without sin or cutting family ties, but that Allah will give him one of three answers: He will quickly fulfill his supplication, He will store it for him in the Hereafter, or He will divert an evil from him similar to it.” They said, “In that case we will ask for more.” The Prophet said, “Allah has even more.”*_
(Musnad Aḥmad 11133)
Du‘ā is a treasure, and anyone who finds and possesses it is truly on a path to success, for du‘ā is the very heart of worship.
May Allaah grant us the ability to worship Him in an excellent manner.
