 FAJR REMINDER: THE MOTHER’S GREATER RIGHT TO BIRR By: Umm Affān Ṣafar 28, 1448 (12-August-2026) Generally speaking, a child must show kindness and dutifulness to both parents. However, the mother has a greater right to a child’s kindness and companionship, and her right takes precedence over the father’s when there is a conflict in matters of Birr. Abū Hurayrah reported: A man asked the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ), “Who is most deserving of my good company?” The Prophet said, “Your mother.” The man asked, “Then who?” The Prophet said, “Your mother.” The man asked again, “Then who?” The Prophet said, “Your mother.” The man asked again, “Then who?” The Prophet said, “Your father.” [Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5971, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2548] This means, for instance, that when a child has Two Hundred Thousand Naira to give to both parents, ¾ of it (i.e., 150,000 Naira) goes to the mother while ¼ of it (i.e., 50,000 Naira) goes to the father. BismilLah Let's continue with our studies of suurah An-Naazi'aat from verse 39-41.  In yesterday's reminder, we studied from verses 38-39 in which ALLAH Azzawajal says "as for the one who transgressed, and preferred the worldly life", the next verse gives verdict for such people as follows; Verse 39 فَإِنَّ الْجَحِيمَ هِيَ الْمَأْوَىٰ "Then indeed, Hellfire will be his or her refuge." These two short verses contain a powerful warning. Remember that when you were young, vulnerable, and unable to care for yourself, your parents carried the responsibility of your upkeep. Therefore, when they reach a stage where they need you, do not hesitate to care for them as they once cared for you. Pay attention to their diet, medications, clothing, shelter, and other essential needs. Spend on them appropriately according to your ability. If they live far away from you, make the effort to visit them and ensure that they are not left without proper care. Many parents have gone hungry so that their children could eat. This is not merely a noble act of character; it is an act of worship that Allāh and His Messenger have given great importance to. To help us understand the seriousness of this responsibility, Allāh has mentioned being dutiful to parents alongside the command to worship Him alone without associating any partners with Him. BismilLah Let's continue with our studies of suurah An-Naazi'aat from verse 35 to 41 which speaks about "The fate of the people of Paradise and Hell". Verse 35. ALLAH Azzawajal says: يَوْمَ يَتَذَكَّرُ الْإِنسَانُ مَا سَعَىٰ “On the Day when every human being will remember what he or she strove for.” Qur’an 79:35. This verse is short, but it carries a very powerful warning. It follows immediately after ALLAH Azzawajal mentions At-Ṭāmmah Al-Kubrā, the Greatest Catastrophe, the Day of Resurrection from the previous verse 34 we studied yesterday.  What does “what he strove for” mean?  FAJR REMINDER: PROTECTING INNOCENCE AND TEACHING MODESTY By: Umm Affān Ṣafar 25, 1448 (9-August-2026) Another important aspect of Tarbiyah al-Awlād (Child Upbringing) that every parent should pay attention to is protecting their children's innocence while gradually teaching them appropriate boundaries between the two sexes. This does not mean exposing children to adult concepts before they are ready. Rather, it means teaching them, in an Islāmic and age-appropriate manner, about safety, modesty, privacy, and self-respect. This aspect of upbringing includes teaching children about ‘Awrah (private parts) naturally when dressing or undressing, helping them understand that “My body is mine, and I can say no,” using correct and respectful language when speaking about the body, and teaching them the importance of privacy when using the bathroom, changing clothes, or getting dressed.  Parents should also gently prepare boys and girls for puberty, explaining Ḥayā’ (modesty) as an asp...
