 FAJR REMINDER: THE MARTYRDOM HE LONGED FOR

Thābit Ibn Qays (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) was a courageous companion of the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ), renowned for his powerful speech and steadfastness. He participated in the battles after Uḥud, always longing for the martyrdom that the Prophet (ﷺ) had foretold for him. The Prophet (ﷺ) had given Thābit (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) glad tidings that he would live a praiseworthy life, be martyred, and enter Paradise. But years passed. Battle after battle came and went, yet Thābit (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) remained alive. He continued to fight, carrying in his heart a longing for the honour he had been promised.


Then came the Khīlafah of Abū Bakr aṣ-Ṣiddīq (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu). The Muslim community faced a grave threat from those who had apostatised or rebelled against the authority of Islām. Among the most difficult of these conflicts was the Battle of Yamāmah, where the Muslims confronted Mūsāylimah al-Kadhdhāb—the Liar—who had falsely claimed prophethood.


Khālid Ibn al-Walīd (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) commanded the Muslim army. Thābit Ibn Qays (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) led the Anṣār, while Sālim, the freedman of Abū Ḥudhayfah (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhumā), carried the banner of the Muhājirūn. The battle was fierce. At one point, the Muslims suffered a severe setback, and some began to retreat.


But Thābit (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) was deeply disturbed by what he witnessed. This was not how they had fought alongside the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ). Anas Ibn Mālik (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) later narrated that Thābit (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) prepared himself for battle, applying perfume to his body. He then declared: “This is not how we used to fight alongside the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ). How evil is what you have accustomed your opponents to, and how evil is what you have accustomed yourselves to.”


Then Thābit (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) advanced. He fought until he was martyred. After years of longing, the moment had finally arrived. The glad tidings of the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) had come to pass: Thābit (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) had lived a praiseworthy life and attained the martyrdom he had so long desired. What a beautiful ending for a man who spent his life striving for the Sake of Allāh!


I beseech Allāh to be Especially Merciful to Thābit Ibn Qays, grant us sincerity, preserve us upon Khayr, keep our hearts firm upon His obedience, and grant us a good ending. Aameen.
