TAFSEER OF SURATUL-FAATIHAH continues

Let's continue with our studies of suuratul Faatihah. 

Verse 4

مَالِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ

“Master/Owner of the Day of Judgement.” Now the suurah moves from ALLAH'S MERCY to the Day of Judgement. Why?

Because a balanced Muslim must remember both: ALLAH'S MERCY 

and ALLAH'S accountability.

The Day of Judgement is the day when every human being will stand before ALLAH Azzawajal. No wealth will save someone merely because he was wealthy. No social status will save someone merely because he was powerful.

مَالِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ

Allah is the Master of the Day of Judgement. A person may escape worldly justice, but nobody escapes ALLAH'S ultimate judgement.

Verse 5.

إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ

“You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help.” This is arguably the central verse of the entire Faatihah.

Notice the order:

First:

إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ

“You alone we worship.”

Then:

وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ

“And You alone we seek help from.”

This establishes Tawheed.

We worship ALLAH alone.

We direct our ultimate dependence and seeking of help to ALLAH Azzawajal.

But notice another beautiful point:

ALLAH Azzawajal says:

نَعْبُدُ — “we worship”

rather than merely:

“I worship.” Even though you are standing alone in your room praying, you are part of a worldwide Ummah worshipping the same Lord.

Practical lesson

This verse teaches us two great principles:

1. Worship ALLAH Azzawajal alone.

2. Depend upon ALLAH Azzawajal.

You may seek permissible assistance from people, but your heart must understand that ALLAH is ultimately the One who makes things happen. A doctor may treat you, but ALLAH Azzawajal gives healing. A person may employ you, but ALLAH Azzawajal provides your provision. A teacher may teach you, but ALLAH Azzawajal gives understanding.
