_Imam Ahmad reported that Ibn ‘Abbas radhiAllahu ‘anhu said that the Prophet salAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam came to Madina and found that the Jews were fasting the day of ‘Ashura._
*He asked them, “What is this day that you fast?”*
They said, “This is a good day during which Allah saved the Children of Israel from their enemy, and Musa used to fast this day.”
The Messenger salAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said,
*أَنَا أَحَقُّ بِمُوسَى مِنْكُم*
*“I have more right to Musa than you have.”*
_So, the Messenger of Allah salAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam fasted that day and ordered that it be fasted.

*Let's continue on a brief commentary on this verse*👇.                                         [2:54] Al-Baqarah-الْبَقَرَة
"وَ اِذۡ قَالَ مُوۡسٰی لِقَوۡمِہٖ یٰقَوۡمِ  اِنَّکُمۡ ظَلَمۡتُمۡ اَنۡفُسَکُمۡ بِاتِّخَاذِکُمُ الۡعِجۡلَ فَتُوۡبُوۡۤا اِلٰی بَارِئِکُمۡ فَاقۡتُلُوۡۤا اَنۡفُسَکُمۡ ؕ ذٰلِکُمۡ خَیۡرٌ  لَّکُمۡ عِنۡدَ بَارِئِکُمۡ ؕ فَتَابَ عَلَیۡکُمۡ ؕ اِنَّہٗ ہُوَ التَّوَّابُ الرَّحِیۡمُ ﴿۵۴﴾

And when Musa (Moses) said to his people: ‘O my people, no doubt you have (seriously) wronged your own souls in taking the calf (as your god). Now turn in repentance to your Creator (the True Sustainer). So, kill one another (amongst yourselves). This (act) would be the best (repentance) for you in the sight of your Creator.’ Then He accepted your repentance. Surely, He is Most Relenting, Ever-Merciful.

● _This was the repentance required from the Children of Israel for worshiping the calf._ Here, *“kill yourselves”* does not mean commit suicide rather as per Ibn ‘Abbas radhiAllahu ‘aanhu.... *Allah ﷻ told the Children of Israel to slay by the sword every person that they meet, be it father or son.*
_When they took the calf as their god, their nation was divided into three groups:
▪. Those who committed the act
▪. Those who stopped the wrongdoers
▪. And those who remained indifferent. They neither participated in the act nor stopped the wrongdoers.

_*The third group was commanded to kill the first group.*_
● _Here, we learn the importance of encouraging good and forbidding evil._
We should never stand as spectators rather if we have knowledge we must step up and stop the wrong.
_Ibn ‘Abbas radhiAllahu ‘anhu commented_
Allah ﷻ ordered Musa ‘alayhi salaam to command his people to kill each other.
*He ordered those who worshipped the calf to sit down and those who did not worship the calf to stand holding knives in their hands.

When they started killing them, a great darkness suddenly overcame them. 👉After the darkness lifted, they had killed seventy thousand of them.
_*Those who were killed among them were forgiven and those who remained alive were also forgiven.*_
*Levels of Sins*
▪. There are sins that are wiped out with good deeds. 
_These are the small sins which are wiped out by performing ablution, offering prayers, etc._
▪. There are sins for which repentance must be sought. 
_For these sins instruction has been given to seek repentance.

_The Prophet salAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said,_
*“Allah ﷻ extends His hand at night to give forgiveness to those who sinned during that day, and He extends His hand during the day to give forgiveness to those who sinned during the night.* *This will continue to be the case until the sun rises from the west.” [Muslim, 2759]*

_He salAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam also said,_ *“Sometimes I perceive a veil over my heart and ask Allah ﷻ for forgiveness one hundred times a day.” [Muslim, 2702]*
▪. Those sins for which expiation must be given. 
👉 _This killing of the wrongdoers was an expiation for their sin.

*Al-Baqara : 55*

*وَإِذْ قُلْتُمْ يٰمُوسٰى لَن نُّؤْمِنَ لَكَ حَتّٰى نَرَى اللَّهَ جَهْرَةً فَأَخَذَتْكُمُ الصّٰعِقَةُ وَأَنتُمْ تَنظُرُونَ*
*And [recall] when you said, "O Moses, we will never believe you until we see Allah outright"; so the thunderbolt took you while you were looking on.*

*Al-Baqara : 56*

*ثُمَّ بَعَثْنٰكُم مِّنۢ بَعْدِ مَوْتِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ*
*Then We revived you after your death that perhaps you would be grateful.*

Musa ‘alayhi salaam returned from meeting with his Lord carrying the Tablets on which Tawrah was written.
● He found that they had worshiped the calf in his absence.
_Consequently, he commanded them to kill themselves, and they compiled, and Allah forgave them.  (2.54)_
*He said to them, “These Tablets have Allah’s Book containing what He commanded you and what He forbade for you.”*
_His people argued, “Should we believe this statement because you said it?_
_By Allah! We will not believe until we see Allah in the open until He shows us Himself and says: This is My Book, therefore, adhere to it.

_Why does He not talk to us as He talked to you, O Musa?”_
● *Allah’s wrath fell upon them, a thunderbolt struck them, and they all died.*
_As-Suddi commented that after they died, Musa‘alayhi salaam stood up pleading and supplicating to Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala,_
*“O Lord! What should I say to the Children of Israel when I go back to them after You destroyed the best of them.* *If it has been Your will, You could have destroyed them and me before; would You destroy us for the deeds of the foolish ones among us?”*
● At this Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala resurrected the dead.

● One man at a time while the rest of them were watching how Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala was bringing them back to life. This is why Allahsubhanahu wa ta’ala said, *“Then We revived you after your death that perhaps you would be grateful.”*  
👉This was a big incident. They were killed and then resurrected.
Ideally, they should have become submissive and obedient to their Prophet. But, no, they continued to disobey him and objected to every command.
