The month of muharram.
Alhamdulillah, the month of Muharram is the first month of the islamic calender.
And it is among the four sacred months in Islam.
Allah says,
At-Taubah 9:36
Indeed, the number of months with Allāh is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allāh [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred.[1] That is the correct religion [i.e., way], so do not wrong yourselves during them.[2] And fight against the disbelievers collectively as they fight against you collectively. And know that Allāh is with the righteous [who fear Him].
There are four sacred months in islam that fighting in them is forbidden or committing sins is Grave in the sight of Allah than other months.
Muharram, Rajab, Dhul Qaeda, Dhul hijjah are the four sacred months.
In the month of muharram, Allah drowned firawn in the red sea with his soldiers.
And it is sunnah to fast on the 10th of muharram as a way to thank Allah for saving moosa A. S. And the children of Israel from their enemy.
We are fasting because of Musa A.S as the prophets are brothers of one another but from different mothers.
It is sunnah to fast on 9th and 10th day of muharram so as to differ from the jews.
As reported in hadith,
Narrated `Aisha:
The people used to fast on 'Ashura (the tenth day of the month of Muharram) before the fasting of Ramadanwas made obligatory. And on that day the Ka`ba used to be covered with a cover. When Allah made the fasting of the month of Ramadan compulsory, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Whoever wishes to fast (on the day of 'Ashura') may do so; and whoever wishes to leave it can do so."
Sahih al-Bukhari 1592.
The first fasting made obligatory upon the muslims was the fasting on the day of muharram but when ramadan was legislated, the fasting of muharram became sunnah.
Abu Qatadah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was asked about observing As-Saum (the fast) on the tenth day of Muharram, andhe replied, "It is an expiation for the sins of the preceding year." [Muslim].
