*THE DISASTER OF THE WELL OF MA'UNA*
In the same month when the tragedy of Ar-Rajī happened, another grotesque and more terrible one occurred; it was known as the Incident of the well of Ma'una.
IT CAN BE SUMMARISED AS FOLLOWS
Abu Barāa 'Amir Ibn Mālik who is called the player of the spearheads came to the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) in Madīnah. The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) called him upon to embrace Islam but he didn't accept it or leave Madīnah. He said: "O Allāh's Messenger! If you sent some of your Companions to the people of Najd to invite them to Islam, they would accept it." The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) replied: "I fear that the people of Najd should harm them." Abu Barāa said: "I will protest them." The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) sent with him seventy Muslims under Al-Mundhir Ibn 'Amr entitled Al-Mu'niq. They were among the best and prominent Muslims and reciters of the Glorious Qur-ān. While they were in Madīnah, they used to sell out gathering firewood by day to buy food for the people of As-Suffah (it was a shaded place at the mosque of Madīnah, where the poor Immigrants used to take shelter and receive the Prophet's care and attention), and studying the Qur-ān and performing prayer by night. Then they settled at the well of Ma'una (a place between Banu 'Amir and volcanic and stony area belonging to Banu Sulaim). They sent Haram Ibn Milhān, the brother of Umm Sulaim with a message to 'Amir Ibn At-Tufail. He didn't read it and ordered a man to stab him with a lance from behind. When it penetrated his body and Haram saw blood flowing, he said: "Well done! I have won."
Immediately 'Amir called upon his tribesmen to fight the remaining Muslims but they refused because of the pledge of protection of Abu Barāa. So he called out Banu Sulaim to go to war against the remaining Muslims. Only 'Usayya, Ri'l and Dhakawān complied with his demand. Then they set out and encircled the Prophet's Companions and killed them all except for Ka'ab Ibn Zaid Ibn An-Najd who was rescued and survived till he was killed on the Day of Al-Khandaq.
When 'Amir Ibn Umayya Ad-Damry and Al-Mundhir Ibn 'Amir were close to the place of the massacre, they saw birds hovering about it. They alighted and fought the Polytheists till one of them was killed and the other ('Amr Ibn Umayya Ad-Damry) was held captive. When he told that he was from Mudar, 'Amir sheared off his forelock and set him free. After that 'Amr Ad-Damry returned to the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) transmitting the news of the terrible disaster that included the death of seventy prominent Muslims. Their tragedy reminded of the misfortune of Uhud. But there was a difference between the two setbacks; the victims of Uhud were killed in a fight whereas these Companions were killed in a perfidious way. When 'Amr was at Al-Qarqarah, he relaxed at a shade of a tree and then two men of the tribe of Kilāb stayed with him. When they slept, 'Amr killed them in the belief that he would avenge the murder of his Companions. The two men 'Amr killed got a pledge of security from the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) but he didn't know that. Having informed the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) of what he did, he grieved for their murder and said angrily: "You have killed two men whose blood I will have to pay." The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) began to collect their blood money from Muslims and their Jewish allies.
The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) grieved very much for this tragedy to the point that he cursed the tribes that killed his Companions. Anas was reported to have said: "The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) was cursing those who murdered his Companions at the well of Ma'una for one month. He used to Allāh (Sub-haanahu wata'aala) to inflict His punishment upon the tribes of Ri'l, Dhakawān, Lahian and 'Usayya saying: "'Usayya disobeyed Allāh and His Messenger." Thereupon Allāh revealed to the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) the verse: "Inform our people that we have met our Lord, He is pleased with us and He has made us pleased", we used to recite. Later on this Qur-ānic verse was cancelled and the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) stopped his Qunut.

*"And keep reminding, because reminding benefits the believers."* (Qur-ān 51:55)
