*THE MILITARY ACTIVITIES AFTER THE BATTLE OF QURAIZA*
*THE COMPANY OF MUHAMMAD IBN MASLAMAH*
This was the first company dispatched after Al-Ahzāb and Quraiza. It consisted of thirty cavalrymen who advanced towards Al-Qartaa in the direction of Dariyya, Al-Bakarāt, Najd. They marched on 20th Muharram, 6 A.H. and stopped at the valley of Bakr Ibn Kilāb. When they assaulted them, they fled away and left behind some cattle and sheep which they (the Muslim cavalrymen) captured. On 29th Muharram, they headed for Madīnah and brought a man from the tribe of Banu Hanīfah who was called Thumāma Ibn Uthāl (who travelled to Madīnah in disguise to assassinate the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) at the request of Musailama the imposter. They fastened him to one of the pillars of the Mosque. The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) went to him and said, "What about you, Thumāma?" He replied: "I have got a good opinion, Muhammad! If you should kill me, you would kill a person who has already killed somebody, and if you should set me free, you would do a favour to one who is grateful, and if you want property, then ask me whatever wealth you want." He was left, and on the next day the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) asked him, "What do you want, Thumāma?" He said: "What I had told you." The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) left him till the day after, when he said: "What about you, Thumāma?" He said: "It's what I told you. Thereupon the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) said: "Release Thumāma." So he went to a garden of date palm trees near to the Mosque, took a bath and then entered the Mosque and said: "I testify that there is no god but Allāh and that Muhammad is His Messenger! By Allāh, there was no face on the surface of the earth most disliked by me than yours, but now your face on the surface of the earth most disliked by me than yours, but now your face has become the most beloved one to me. By Allāh, there was no religion most disliked by me than yours, but now it is the closest religion to my heart. By Allāh, there was no town most disliked by me than your town, but now it is the dearest town to me. Your cavalrymen arrested me (at the time) when I intended to perform the 'Umrah. And now what do you think?" The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) gave him good tidings (congratulated him) and ordered him to perform the 'Umrah. So when he came to Mecca, someone said to him: "You have changed your religion?" Thumāma replied: "No! By Allāh, I have embraced Islam. No, by Allāh! Not a single grain of wheat will come to you from Yamama unless the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) gives his permission." Yamāmah was the countryside of Mecca. When he returned home, he prevented them from buying wheat and caused them to suffer a lot. Then Quraish sent a message to the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) that he should let Thumāma provide them with wheat loads. The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) ordered him to let them buy wheat.
