FAJR REMINDER: DELIBERATELY PRECEDING THE IMĀM

One common mistake seen during congregational prayer is that some people rush ahead of the Imām in Takbīr, Rukū’, Sujūd, and even in giving Salām. At times, a person may even notice this habit in himself without paying much attention to it.
This behavior is clearly wrong, because Allāh’s Messenger ﷺ said: “The Imām has been appointed to be followed (in the congregational prayers). So, when he utters the Takbīr, utter the Takbīr too, and do not utter the Takbīr until he utters it. When he bows, you should bow, and do not bow until he bows. When he says, “Sami‘ a l-lāhu liman ḥamidah,” say, “Rabbana laka l-ḥamd.” When he prostrates, you prostrate; and do not prostrate until he prostrates. If he prays standing, pray standing, and if he prays sitting, all of you pray sitting.” [Sunan Abī Dāwūd 603; classed as Ṣaḥīḥ by Shaykh al-Albānī in Irwa’ al-Ghalīl 2/121]
This matter may seem small to some people, but in reality, it is very serious. The Prophet (ﷺ) did not speak lightly about it. In principle, the phrase “do not” mentioned in the Ḥadīth indicates prohibition, meaning the action is Ḥarām. In fact, considering it a major sin would not be an exaggeration, because of the severe warning found in another narration where the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Isn't he who raises his head before the Imām afraid that Allāh may transform his head into that of a donkey or his figure (face) into that of a donkey?” [Ṣaḥiḥ al-Bukhārī 691]
Such a stern threat is among the signs that an act may fall under the category of major sins. Following the Imām is obligatory, while going ahead of him is forbidden. If Islām teaches us to approach the prayer with calmness, dignity, and composure, then how much more careful should we be while we are actually standing before Allāh in prayer?
The Ṣaḥābah (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhum) understood this well and were extremely careful not to move before the Prophet (ﷺ) during prayer. Al-Barā’ Ibn ‘Āzib (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) said: “When we performed Ṣalāt behind Allāh's Messenger, he would raise his head from bowing, and no man among us would bend his back until Allāh's Messenger prostrated, then we prostrated.” [Jami‘ At-Tirmidhī 281]
As for the ruling, if a person deliberately goes ahead of the Imām while fully aware of the ruling and conscious of his action, then his prayer becomes invalid. However, if he acted out of ignorance or forgetfulness, then his prayer remains valid—unless he realizes the mistake before the Imām completes that action. In such a case, he must return and perform it correctly after the Imām. If he refuses to do so while knowing the ruling and understanding what he is doing, then his prayer is invalid.
We ask Allāh to grant us proper understanding of His Religion and to make us correctly worship Him. Aameen.
