FAJR REMINDER: THE GATES AND THE LEVELS OF HELL

Dhū al-Qa'dah 12, 1447 (30-April-2026)
Just as Jannah (Paradise) has gates prepared for its people, Hell too has gates awaiting its inhabitants. Allāh says: “So enter the gates of Hell, to dwell therein. Thus evil indeed is the abode of the arrogant.” [Sūrah An-Naḥl (16): 29]
While Jannah is blessed with eight gates, Hell has seven. Each of these gates has been assigned a specific group from among the followers of Shayṭān. Every individual will enter through a gate that corresponds to their deeds, and their place within Hell will also be determined by what they earned in this world. Allāh says: “To it are seven gates: for each of those gates is a (special) class (of sinners) assigned.” [Surah Al-Ḥijr (15): 44]
The levels of Hell vary, and they are not all the same. They differ based on the extent of disbelief and wrongdoing committed in the worldly life. Among its inhabitants, the hypocrites will suffer the worst fate, as they will be placed in the lowest depths of the Fire. Allāh says: “Verily, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depth (grade) of the Fire; no helper will you find for them.” [Sūrah An-Nisā' (4): 145]
Even the one who will receive the least punishment in Hell will face a torment that is beyond imagination. Nu’mān Ibn Bashīr (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) mentioned: I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) saying, “The person who will have the least punishment from amongst the Hell Fire people on the Day of Resurrection, will be a man under whose arch of the feet a smoldering ember will be placed so that his brain will boil because of it.” [Ṣaḥiḥ al-Bukhārī 6561] In another narration, he (ﷺ) said: “Indeed the person among the inhabitants of the Fire punished least (on the Day of Judgment) is a man who has two coals beneath his feet, which cause his brain to boil.” [Jami‘ At-Tirmidhī 2604]
This individual has been identified as Abū Ṭālib. Due to the support and protection he offered to Islām in its early days, his punishment will be lessened. However, because he passed away upon other than Islām, Hell remains his final destination. Ibn ‘Abbās (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhuma) narrated: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Among the inhabitants of the Fire, Abū Ṭālib would have the least suffering, and he would be wearing two shoes (of Fire) which would boil his brain.” [Ṣaḥiḥ Muslim 212]
Subḥānallāh! I beseech Allāh, the Most Merciful, to protect us from the torment of Hell and make us among the people of safety. Aameen.
