*HADHRAT ABDULLAH BIN AMR (رضي الله عنه) BURNS HIS SHEET*
Hadhrat Abdullah bin Amr Ibnul Aas (رضي الله عنه) says: “Once we were accompanying Rasûlullâh (ﷺ) on a journey. I went to see him and I was wearing a saffron coloured sheet. He asked me, ‘What is this that you are wearing?’ I felt that he did not like my wearing a cloth of that colour. When I reached home, I found a fire burning. I threw my garment into the fire. The next day when I went to Rasûlullâh (ﷺ), he inquired, ‘where is that sheet?’ I told him what I had done with it. He remarked, “You could have given it to one of the ladies in your house. Women are permitted to wear clothes of that colour.”
Hadhrat Abdullah bin Amr Ibnul Aas (رضي الله عنه) was so much perturbed at Rasûlullâh (ﷺ)'s displeasure that he did not hesitate to avail of the first opportunity of doing away with the sheet that caused the displeasure. He did not even think of making any other use of that garment. If we had been in his place, we would have thought of some excuse or the other for keeping it, or at least finding some other use for it. (Fazaail-e-A'amaal)
He has experienced the taste of faith who is satisfied with Allâh as his Lord, Islam as his religion, and Muhammad (ﷺ) as the final Prophet.
Goodness is faith and obedience. Inviting others to this is a lofty rank in the sight of Allâh and a powerful means to draw nearer to Him. Thus, he who makes enjoining goodness his habit and main preoccupation, he has taken an ample share of the heritage of the Messenger of Allâh (ﷺ). For he was only preoccupied at all times with summoning to Allâh, both with his words and deeds. This is why Allâh sent him and this is what he was commanded to do.
Thus, the people nearest to the Messenger of Allâh (ﷺ) are those who are most concerned with this matter, and most preoccupied with it, and most actively engaged in it - enjoining good, which is faith and obedience, and forbidding their opposites, which are disbelief and sin. Success in this context being the attainment of happiness in both this world and the next.
An ostentatious affection for the blessed Prophet (ﷺ) can do little to create an authentic affinity with him. *Real love* between us and the Prophet (ﷺ) is established when we follow the actions of his life; actions that made his life; actions that made his life truly the Last Messenger (ﷺ)'s life, and a life that is worthy of imitation for all people until the end of the world.
Following the Sunnah is to submit to Allâh, and to efface one's ego. In its comprehensive sense, Sunnah is not just following the Prophet (ﷺ) in one particular act, but adopting the way of the Prophet (ﷺ) in the pursuit of meritorious acts, supererogatory practices and habits.
Allâh created human beings pure and perfect, with no original sin. Sinners destroy this perfection with their own hands. Believers strive to preserve this perfection with their dedicated obedience.
For all humanity, Allâh has ordained a law and a way in conformity with His universal plan. The path of Rasûlullâh (ﷺ) encompasses the whole of human life. Undeterred by any worldly power, unmoved by any offer of worldly gain, he proclaimed the glory of Allâh. All who come after him should endeavour to pursue this stoic frame of mind.
Man's greatest achievement is in possessing those qualities that make him truly human. These qualities are enshrined in the eternal names of Allâh, the greatest manifestations of which are to be seen in the Prophet (ﷺ). This is why the Prophet (ﷺ) told us that he was sent to complete the excellence of character. A believer can hope to attain some of the sweet qualities of the Prophet (ﷺ) by following him in both the physical acts of the Sunnah as well as the spiritual acts of the Sunnah. His Sunnah is the only means of drawing near to Allâh. By emulating every act of the Prophet (ﷺ) every living moment of a believer becomes significant, every action full of meaning.
By following his moral and spiritual teachings, we follow the best of human examples. There are no virtues other than his virtues; all virtues are subsumed under his virtues.
In addition to the blessed virtues and striving to live by this, Allâh has ordered us in the Qur'an to send Durood/Salawat on our Prophet (ﷺ), and mentioned that it is the Sunnah of Allâh himself, and his Angels. Do you think anything could be better than the Sunnah of Allah Almighty?
“Invoke blessings on me abundantly on Friday. Verily it is attended and the Angels attend it, and none invokes blessings on me but his supplications is presented to me till he finishes it.”
