FAJR REMINDER: IS YOUR GHUSL VALID?
By: Umm Affān
Ṣafar 16, 1448 (31-July-2026)
For Ghusl (i.e., ritual washing of the entire body to attain purification after major impurity) to be valid, two essential conditions must be fulfilled:
1. Intention (Niyyah)
Every act of worship begins with intention. It is the intention that distinguishes an act of Ghusl performed for purification from an ordinary bath. Before beginning Ghusl, make the intention in your heart to remove the state of major impurity so that you can perform acts of worship such as Ṣalāh. Since intention is an action of the heart, there is no need to verbalize it, as the Prophet (ﷺ) never did so.
2. Water must reach every part of the body
This is the second essential requirement for a valid Ghusl. Everything beyond these two essentials is from the Sunnah and earns additional reward.
One of the most common mistakes people make during Ghusl is failing to ensure that water reaches every part of the body. Pay close attention to areas that are easily overlooked, such as behind the ears, inside the navel, between the fingers and toes, under the armpits, behind the knees, and within skin folds. Every part of the body must be washed. For women with braided hair, it is not necessary to undo the braids, provided that water reaches the roots of the hair.
The Sunnah method of performing Ghusl is to wash both hands three times, wash the private parts, perform a complete Wuḍūʼ, then pour water over the entire body, beginning with the right side, followed by the left. While washing, pass your hands over the body as much as possible, ensuring that water reaches every area.
Ā'ishah (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anha) reported: “Whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) took a bath after Janābah, he started by washing his hands and then performed ablution like that for the prayer. After that, he would put his fingers in water and gently move the roots of his hair with them. Then, he would pour three handfuls of water over his head and then pour water all over his body.” [Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 248]
It is important to remember that if, after Ghusl, a person uses the toilet, passes wind, or falls into a deep sleep, only their Wuḍūʼ is invalidated—not the Ghusl. They simply need to renew their Wuḍūʼ before performing Ṣalāh.
A correct Ghusl is the foundation of valid worship. Take a few extra moments to ensure that water has reached every part of your body.
I beseech Allāh (ﷻ) to accept all our acts of worship. Aameen.
