FAJR REMINDER: WHAT MAKES GHUSL OBLIGATORY?

Ghusl is the complete ritual washing of the entire body prescribed in Islām to attain purification after major impurity before performing acts of worship such as Ṣalāh. Without Ghusl, the Ṣalāh of a person who is in a state of major ritual impurity is invalid. Allāh (ﷻ) says: “...If you are in a state of Janābah (i.e., had a sexual discharge), purify yourself (bathe your whole body)...” [Sūrah Al-Mā'idah (5): 6]
There are certain situations in which Ghusl becomes obligatory. They include the following:
1. Sexual Intercourse: Ghusl becomes obligatory when sexual intercourse takes place through the meeting of the two circumcised parts, that is, when the head of the male organ enters the vagina, whether ejaculation occurs or not.
Abū Hurayrah (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) narrated that the Prophet of Allāh (ﷺ) said: “When a man sits between the four parts (arms and legs of his wife) and has intercourse with her, then Ghusl is obligatory.” [Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 291] In another narration, the Prophet (ﷺ) added: “...A bath becomes obligatory (no matter whether or not there is seminal emission or ejaculation).” [Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 349]
Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymīn (Raḥimahullāh) said: “It is clear that Ghusl is required in this case, even if he does not ejaculate. This is something that is not known to many people, so you may find that this has happened to a couple, but they do not do Ghusl, especially if they are young and have not learned much. This is based on their idea that Ghusl is only required when ejaculation takes place, but this is wrong.” [Ash-Sharḥ Al-Mumti’ 1/223]
2. Emission of Semen: Ghusl is also obligatory upon the discharge of semen due to ejaculation or orgasm, whether a person is asleep or awake, and whether male or female. Abū Sa‘īd Al-Khudri (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Water is for water (i.e., Ghusl must be done when semen is emitted).” [Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 343]
3. The End of Menstruation or Postpartum Bleeding (Nifās): When a woman's menstrual or postpartum bleeding ends, she must perform Ghusl before resuming acts of worship such as Ṣalāh.
Allāh (ﷻ) says: “They ask you concerning menstruation. Say: that is an Adha (a harmful thing for a husband to have a sexual intercourse with his wife while she is having her menses), therefore keep away from women during menses and go not unto them till they have purified (from menses and have taken a bath). And when they have purified themselves, then go in unto them as Allah has ordained for you (go in unto them in any manner as long as it is in their vagina).” [Sūrah Al-Baqarah (2): 222]
Ā‘ishah narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “When the time of menstruation comes, stop praying, and when it goes, perform Ghusl.” [Sunan An-Nasa‘ī 350] Although this Ḥadīth specifically mentions menstruation, postpartum bleeding carries the same ruling according to the consensus of the Ṣaḥābah.
It was also stated: “Among the things that make Ghusl obligatory for a Muslim are: the emission of semen whilst sleeping; the disappearing of the tip of the penis into the vagina even if no ejaculation takes place; the emission of semen with pleasure when one is awake, even if no intercourse takes place; and menses and postpartum bleeding in the case of a woman, in which case she must do Ghusl when the bleeding stops.” [Fatāwā Al-Lajnah Ad-Da’imah (5/314)]
In addition to the situations mentioned above, Ghusl is required in the following cases:
1. Death: A deceased Muslim must be washed before burial, and this is by the consensus of the scholars.
2. Accepting Islām: A person who embraces Islām is required to perform Ghusl.
3. Before Attending the Jumu'ah Prayer: Many scholars recommend performing Ghusl before the Friday prayer, while some hold that it is obligatory. Abū Sa’īd al-Khudri (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) reported:
“Taking a bath on Friday is a duty upon every person who has reached the age of puberty.” [Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 839, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 846]
There are other authentic Aḥādīth on this subject which have led some scholars to conclude that this command applies particularly to those whose perspiration or body odour may cause discomfort to others. Allāh knows best.
I beseech Allāh (ﷻ) to make us among those who purify both their bodies and their hearts. Aameen.
