FAJR REMINDER: STANDING FIRM UPON THE TRUTH

Again, let us return to the remarkable story of the pious milkmaid.
After overhearing the conversation between the mother and her daughter, the Khalīfah, ‘Umar Ibn Al-Khaṭṭāb (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu), became aware of the mother's intention. The following day, he sent a man to purchase milk from her. To his surprise and delight, the milk had not been adulterated. The young woman had remained true to her principles, refusing to obey her mother in an act of disobedience to Allāh. She recognised the difference between right and wrong and chose the pleasure of her Lord over the approval of her mother. What a remarkable example of sincerity, courage, and steadfastness!
This incident offers timeless lessons for every Muslim. Abū Sa’īd al-Khudrī (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) reported: The Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) said, “Whoever among you sees evil, let him change it with his hand. If he cannot do so, then with his tongue. If he cannot do so, then with his heart, which is the weakest level of faith.” [Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 49]
The first level of changing evil is by the hand, and this is the responsibility of those whom Allāh has entrusted with authority and the ability to act. This was exactly how the Khalīfah conducted himself. He neither ignored what he had heard nor excused it as a private affair. Instead, he investigated the matter by purchasing the milk so that he could determine whether the intended deception had actually been carried out. Had the milk been adulterated, justice would have been served; instead, honesty was rewarded. This is the hallmark of righteous leadership—a leader who neither overlooks wrongdoing nor neglects those who deserve recognition for their righteousness.
The daughter, on the other hand, fulfilled her obligation by advising her mother against deceit. She spoke the truth despite the pressure placed upon her, and she followed her words with action by refusing to adulterate the milk. She stood firmly upon what was right, proving that sincere faith is demonstrated not merely by speech but by unwavering obedience. Allāh (ﷻ) says: “…Help you one another in Al-Birr and At-Taqwā (virtues, righteousness, and piety); but do not help one another in sins and transgression…” [Sūrah Al-Mā’idah (5): 2]
O servants of Allāh! Let us fear Allāh as He deserves to be feared. Let us constantly examine our deeds and ask ourselves whether we would remain obedient if no one else were watching us. The true believer knows that even when people cannot see, Allāh certainly does.
When it became evident that the milk had not been adulterated, Khalīfah ‘Umar (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) remarked, “The daughter stayed strong even when her mother wanted her to do something wrong. She deserves a reward. What reward should I give her?” Ibn ‘Abbās (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhuma) suggested, “She should be rewarded with some money.” But the Khalīfah looked beyond temporary wealth. He recognised the priceless value of a woman whose character had been shaped by Taqwā. He replied, “A daughter like her would be a great wife for my son. Someday she would make a good mother—strong, honest, and a great role model. Because she is so good, she should be given the greatest gift in the nation. Everyone in the nation should learn how to be good like her.”
I beseech Allāh (ﷻ) to make us among those who sincerely enjoin good, forbid evil, and remain steadfast upon the truth. Aameen
