This morning, let us reflect on another remarkable man whose heart was opened to Islām through the recitation of the Qur'ān. Allāhu Akbar! He was Thābit Ibn Qays Al-Anṣārī (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu).
Thābit belonged to the Khazraj tribe. When the Prophet (ﷺ) sent Muṣ‘ab Ibn ‘Umayr (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) to call the people of Madīnah to Islām, Thābit listened to his recitation of the Qur'ān. The beauty of Muṣ‘ab’s voice, together with the calm and captivating rhythm of his recitation, deeply moved him. More importantly, the powerful message of the Qur'ān touched his heart and mind, leading him to embrace Islām. Thus, he became one of the earliest Muslims in Madīnah.
Thābit was blessed with exceptional eloquence and was widely admired for his powerful voice and outstanding speaking ability. Along with his natural talent, he possessed a sincere heart and remarkable wisdom in dealing with people and different situations. Because of these qualities, he became known as Khatīb Ar-Rasūl—the spokesman of Allāh’s Messenger.
Whenever Thābit spoke, his words carried weight and conviction, winning the hearts of those who listened. His speeches left a lasting impression on his audience. Whenever Arab delegations came boasting of their excellence in eloquence and poetry, the Prophet (ﷺ) entrusted Thābit with addressing them on behalf of the Muslims.
Thābit dedicated his intellect, eloquence, and speaking skills entirely to the service of Islām, using the gifts Allāh had bestowed upon him to defend and convey the truth. Every blessing that Allāh grants us—whether it is knowledge, wealth, eloquence, professional expertise, physical strength, or any other talent—is an Amānah (trust) that should be used in ways that earn His Pleasure. A Muslim should strive to use his or her abilities to support the Religion of Allāh, spread beneficial knowledge, assist fellow Muslims, and serve humanity with sincerity.
Just as Thābit Ibn Qays (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) devoted his remarkable gift of eloquence to defending and promoting Islām, every believer should ask: How can I use what Allāh has blessed me with to benefit His Religion? When our talents and resources are dedicated to righteous causes, they become acts of worship that continue to earn rewards long after we are gone.
We will pause here for today and, Allāh willing, continue learning about the inspiring life of Thābit Ibn Qays (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) next week.
I beseech Allāh (ﷻ) to be Especially Merciful to our beloved Thābit Ibn Qays. Aameen.
