FAJR REMINDER: WHEN DU‘Ā’ BECOMES SHIRK

There is perhaps no greater tragedy than a person who sincerely longs for relief, yet turns to the wrong source in search of it. Across different places today, some Muslims, during moments of fear, hardship, illness, or even prosperity, direct their hearts and voices to the dead—people they regard as saints or righteous servants of Allāh. They plead with them for help, seek their intervention, and ask them to fulfil needs that only the Lord of the worlds has the power to fulfil.
Such requests are not ordinary words. They are supplications, and supplication (Du’ā‘) is (an act of) Ibādah (worship). Every sincere supplication is an expression of humility, dependence, hope, and trust. These are acts of worship that belong exclusively to Allāh. Therefore, whoever asks another being for matters that only Allāh can grant—such as sustenance, healing, protection from calamities, forgiveness, or relief from distress—has directed an act of worship to other than Allāh.
The believer's heart should never become attached to anyone besides his Creator. It is Allāh Alone Who hears every whisper, responds to every sincere caller, cures every illness, removes every hardship, and provides for every creature. As for those who are called upon besides Him—especially those who have returned to their graves—they possess no share of His Dominion, no ability to answer prayers, and no power to benefit or harm anyone.
Allāh (ﷻ) says: “…Such is Allāh your Lord; His is the kingdom. And those whom you invoke or call upon instead of Him, own not even a Qitmir (the thin membrane over the date-stone). If you invoke (or call upon) them, they hear not your call, and if (in case) they were to hear, they could not grant it (your request) to you. And on the Day of Resurrection, they will disown your worshipping them. And none can inform you (O Muḥammad) like Him Who is the All-Knower (of each and everything).” [Sūrah Fāṭir (35): 13-14]
Some attempt to defend this practice by saying, “We do not believe these righteous people possess any independent power to benefit or harm us. We only seek them as intermediaries who will intercede with Allāh on our behalf.” While this may sound convincing to some, it is neither a new argument nor an acceptable excuse before Allāh. It is the very reasoning advanced by the idolaters of Makkah, whom the Qur'ān condemned despite their acknowledgement that Allāh is the Supreme Creator.
Allāh (ﷻ) informs: “And they worship besides Allāh things that hurt them not, nor profit them, and they say: ‘These are our intercessors with Allāh.‘ Say: ‘Do you inform Allāh of that which He knows not in the heavens and on the earth?’ Glorified and Exalted be He above all that which they associate as partners with Him!” [Sūrah Yūnus (10): 18]
These verses expose a dangerous misconception that has survived through the centuries. The issue is not merely whether those invoked can independently benefit or harm. Rather, the very act of directing worship to other than Allāh—even under the claim of seeking nearness to Him—is itself the essence of major Shirk. The dead cannot hear those who call upon them, nor can they answer their pleas. Even if they were able to hear, they possess no authority to grant what is asked of them. On the Day of Resurrection, they will dissociate themselves from those who worshipped them or sought them as rivals alongside Allāh.
Allāh (ﷻ) says: “Surely, the religion (i.e., the worship and the obedience) is for Allāh only. And those who take Auliyā' (protectors and helpers) besides Him (say): ‘We worship them only that they may bring us near to Allāh.‘ Verily, Allāh will judge between them concerning that wherein they differ. Truly, Allāh guides not him who is a liar, and a disbeliever.” [Sūrah Az-Zumar (39): 3]
How Merciful is Allāh that He has left us with such clear guidance before we stand before Him. He calls upon us to invoke Him directly, without barriers, intermediaries, or partners. His Door is always open, His Mercy is always vast, and His Response is always near to those who call upon Him with sincerity.
I beseech Allāh (ﷻ) to purify our hearts from every trace of Shirk, keep our tongues busy with sincere Du’ā‘ to Him Alone, make us steadfast upon pure Tawḥīd until our last breath, and gather us among those who will meet Him free from associating any partner with Him. Aameen.
