FAJR REMINDER: WHOM DO YOU TAKE YOUR DĪN FROM?

The more you learn about Islām from authentic sources, the more convinced you become that it is the true religion revealed by Allāh for all people until the end of time. Islām is a religion that is simple, rational, clear, and comprehensive. Its beauty has no limit because it originates from the Infinite One—our Creator and the Only True God worthy of worship. Among the greatest blessings Allāh has bestowed upon us is that He guided us to this perfect religion. As Allāh (ﷻ) says: “…This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islām as your religion…” [Sūrah Al-Mā’idah (5): 3]
Being a Muslim is purely a favor and mercy from Allāh. Therefore, seeking authentic Islāmic knowledge and striving to practice it correctly should be among our greatest priorities. However, every sincere seeker must ask an important question: From whom do I take my religion? Do I learn from those who firmly adhere to the Qur'ān and the Sunnah of the Messenger (ﷺ), or from those who rely upon personal opinions and intellect while leading others astray? Sufyān Ath-Thawrī (Raḥimahullāh) wisely said: “Do not take this Dīn of what is permissible and what is impermissible except from the known heads of knowledge.” [Sharḥ ‘Ilal At-Tirmidhī li-Ibn Rajab 1/372]
One of the greatest trials of our time is that many people, despite possessing little understanding of the pristine teachings of Islām, assume the position of teachers, speakers, and callers to the religion. Their eloquence often deceives people into believing they are scholars. Shaykh Al-Albāni (Raḥimahullāh) aptly described this reality when he said: “The Muslims of today can't differentiate between things. They think that one is an 'Ālim just because one talks.” [Silsilatul Hudā wan-Nūr 852]
For this reason, never rush to associate yourself with every gathering or every group that claims to represent Islām. First, examine whether they are truly based on the Qur'ān and the authentic Sunnah as understood by the righteous predecessors. Before committing yourself to any circle of knowledge, know who its teachers are and what methodology they follow. Imām Mālik Ibn Anas (Raḥimahullāh) gave timeless advice: “Indeed this knowledge is your flesh and blood, on the Day of Judgement you'll be asked about it. Therefore, look to whom you take (knowledge) from.” [Al-Kifāyah 21]
O brethren! Picture your heart as a beautiful garden. The knowledge you seek is like the water that nourishes it. Pure water brings life, growth, and flourishing plants, while polluted water destroys everything it touches. Likewise, authentic knowledge strengthens Eemān, whereas corrupt teachings gradually poison the heart and distance a person from the truth.
Therefore, be extremely careful about whom you listen to and whom you allow to influence your religion. Do not take your Dīn from ignorant, disgraceful, or wicked individuals who speak carelessly about the religion, nor from pretenders whose falsehood may one day become a source of regret in this world and the next.
I beseech Allāh (ﷻ) to open our hearts to the truth, bless us with beneficial knowledge, and grant us the ability to distinguish truth from falsehood. Aameen.
