Yaumul Jumuat | 18th day of Muharram, 1448 AH | Friday, 3rd July, 2026. *_TAFSEER OF SUURAH ABASA, QUR'AN 80 continues_*. BismilLah.
Alhamdulillah for granting us the opportunity to be part of this blessed day of the week. Let's begin with our studies of this suurah.
Verses 4-7.
4. "Or that he might be reminded, and the reminder would benefit him."
5. "As for the one who considers himself self-sufficient,"
6. "To him you give your attention."
7. "Yet you are not responsible if he does not purify himself."
Commentary (Tafseer):
These verses continue ALLAH’S loving instruction to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and establish timeless principles for anyone who calls others to ALLAH Azzawajal.
ALLAH Azzawajal first draws attention to the sincere seeker. 'Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum رضي الله عنه came only to learn and remember ALLAH Azzawajal. Such a person is ready to benefit from guidance because his heart is humble and receptive. ALLAH Azzawajal says that the reminder may benefit him by increasing his faith, purifying his soul, and encouraging righteous deeds.
ALLAH Azzawajal then contrasts him with those who considered themselves self-sufficient. These were some of the leading men of Quraysh who believed their wealth, influence, and status meant they did not need the message of Islam. Their problem was not a lack of evidence, but a lack of humility.
ALLAH Azzawajal says:
"As for the one who considers himself self-sufficient, to him you give your attention."
The Prophet ﷺ devoted time to them because he hoped that if they embraced Islam, many others would follow. His intention was sincere and for the benefit of Islam. Nevertheless, ALLAH Azzawajal wanted to teach a higher principle: the value of a person is determined by the state of their heart, not by their worldly position.
ALLAH Azzawajal then says:
"Yet you are not responsible if he does not purify himself."
This is a fundamental lesson in da'wah. The responsibility of the Messenger ﷺ and of every Muslim who conveys the truth is to deliver the message clearly and sincerely. Guidance belongs to ALLAH Azzawajal alone. If someone chooses arrogance over faith, the caller is not blameworthy after conveying the truth faithfully.
This principle appears throughout the Qur'an. ALLAH Azzawajal repeatedly reminds HIS Messenger ﷺ that he cannot force guidance into people's hearts.
ALLAH Azzawajal says:
"You are only a warner." (Qur'an 88:21) And HE says again:
"Indeed, you do not guide whom you love, but ALLAH Azzawajal guides whom HE wills." (Qur'an 28:56). These verses teach us to balance effort with trust in ALLAH Azzawajal. We strive to convey the truth with wisdom and kindness, but we leave the results to ALLAH Azzawajal alone. *_May ALLAH Azzawajal keep guiding and protecting us from any satanic influences_*. Aameen.
