FAJR REMINDER: THE KHUTBAH AND ITS CONDITIONS

The Fuqahā’ (jurists) of the four Madhāhib are reported to have agreed that the Jumu’ah Khutbah (Friday Sermon) is an essential condition for the validity of the Friday prayer. It is part of the remembrance of Allāh that He commands in His Saying: “O you who believe (Muslims)! When the call is proclaimed for the Ṣalāt (Prayer) on Friday (Jumu’ah prayer), come to the remembrance of Allāh [Jumu’ah religious talk (i.e. Khutbah) and Ṣalāt (prayer)] and leave of business (and every other thing), that is better for you if you did but know!” [Sūrah Al-Jumu’ah (62): 9]
The Jumu’ah Khutbah has two important conditions. First, it must be delivered after the time for Jumu’ah prayer begins. Second, unlike the ‘Eid Khutbah, which is given after the prayer, the Jumu’ah Khutbah must be delivered before the prayer. There should also not be a long gap between the Khutbah and the prayer. Rather, the prayer should follow immediately after the Khutbah. Ibn Qudāmah (Raḥimahullāh) said: “It is essential that the prayer comes immediately after the Khutbah.” [Al-Mughnī 2/79] Furthermore, the Khutbah should be delivered audibly, not silently, because its purpose cannot be achieved unless the congregation can hear it.
With this in mind, how serious is it to arrive late for Jumu’ah and miss the Khutbah? This is a reminder to those who regularly miss the Khutbah without a valid excuse. Strive to arrive early and give the sermon the attention it deserves. Do not focus solely on catching the prayer, as the Khutbah is also an important part of Jumu’ah.
I beseech Allāh to accept our acts of worship, increase us in Eemān, and grant us the ability to observe Jumu’ah in the best manner. Aameen.
