FAJR REMINDER: THOSE WHO HAVE TAQWĀ…

Prophet Ibrāhīm (‘Alayhi Salām) was commanded through a dream to sacrifice his beloved son, Isma’īl (‘Alayhi Salām). This was undoubtedly one of the greatest and clearest tests of faith ever placed upon a servant of Allāh. Yet, without hesitation, Prophet Ibrāhīm (‘Alayhi Salām) hastened to fulfil what he had seen, demonstrating complete submission to the Command of Allāh and unwavering obedience to Him. Because of his remarkable devotion, Allāh (ﷻ) praises him, saying: “And of Ibrāhīm who fulfilled (or conveyed) all that (what Allāh ordered him to do or convey).” [Sūrah An-Najm (53): 37]
As a reward for his sincerity and obedience, Allāh replaced Isma’īl (‘Alayhi Salām) with a sacrificial animal. Allāh (ﷻ) says: “And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice (i.e. a ram), and We left for him (a goodly remembrance) among generations (to come) in later times. Salāmun (peace) be upon Ibrāhīm! Thus indeed do We reward the Muḥsinūn (good-doers).” [Sūrah Aṣ-Ṣāffāt (37): 107-110] It was reported that Ibn Abbās (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhuma) said, “A ram which had grazed in Paradise for forty years.” [Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr 37:107]
Allāhu Akbar! Such is the reward of those who obey Allāh, especially when obedience requires sacrifice and hardship. No act of devotion done sincerely for His Sake goes unnoticed. Allāh (ﷻ) says: “And whosoever fears Allāh and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty). And He will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine. And whosoever puts his trust in Allāh, then He will suffice him. Verily, Allāh will accomplish his purpose. Indeed Allāh has set a measure for all things.” [Sūrah Aṭ-Ṭalāq (65): 2-3]
The statement of Allāh (ﷻ), “And We left for him (a goodly remembrance) among generations (to come) in later times,” continues to manifest itself in the lives of Muslims until today. The sacrifice of a ram, or any of the prescribed sacrificial animals during the days of ‘Eid al-Aḍḥa, remains a noble act of worship performed by Muslims both on Ḥajj and in their homes around the world. Just as Allāh did not intend for Isma’īl to be slaughtered, He does not need the blood or meat of our sacrifices. What He seeks from us is sincere Taqwā and devotion. Allāh says: “It’s neither their meat nor their blood that reaches Allāh, but it’s Taqwā (piety, etc.) from you that reaches Him. Thus have We made them subject to you so that you may glorify Allāh for His Guidance to you…” [Sūrah Al-Ḥajj (22): 37]
Therefore, the true lesson of this great event is not merely the act of sacrifice itself, but complete submission to Allāh in all aspects of our lives. May we strive to.
I beseech Allāh to make us among those who truly submit and obey Him sincerely, whether in ease or difficulty, and earn His Pleasure in this world and the next. Aameen.
