Communication is the act of conveying meanings from an individual or group to another through the use of mutually understood signs, symbols, and semiotic rules. Hence, it is a process of creating and sharing ideas, information, views, facts, feelings, etc. among the people to reach a common understanding through verbal and/or nonverbal medium. The communication process consists of several components.

These are The sender; the message (the information to be conveyed); encoding the message; a channel of communication which is how the message is sent; decoding the message; and, feedback. Channels of communication include speaking, writing, video transmission, audio transmission, electronic transmission through emails, text messages and faxes, and even nonverbal communication, such as body language, silence, gestures, posture, distance, eye contact, display of emotions, clothing, etc.

Every believer is expected to learn guiding rules regarding verbal, nonverbal, and another medium of communication to know the signs of his action and how to apply it.

*Why this topic?*

A person is known by the way he communicates; it describes his level of maturity and understanding. The first impression we have of a person, how people interact with a person, how a person enjoys another person’s company is based on the way one communicates. Islam has established several guiding rules that every Muslim should abide by when communicating.

However, *with just 10 MB data some people have said or wrote what they cannot defend on the day of resurrection; lots of insults, abuse, unnecessary argument, attacking, criticizing, cursing, mocking, posting or sharing indecent pictures or videos, filthy chatting with non-Mahram…and rejection of verse of Quran or Hadeeths or making jest of it* – Subhaanallaah! The Sunnah is to learn how to say good things or keep quiet. Every Muslim must always remember, without a doubt, that he will account for every good and bad thing that he says or writes.

He will be rewarded for his good words, and he will be punished for every bad word that he says or writes. Allaah says: “Not a word does he utter, but there is a watcher by him ready (to record it).” *Quran 50:18*

Verbal and nonverbal communication can be dangerous, therefore, Islam imparts and spread blameless and principled manners for every Muslim to maintain and to know what, why, where, when, and how to communicate. Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“A man may utter a word pleasing to Allah without considering it of any significance, but for which Allah elevates his ranks (in Paradise); another one may speak a word displeasing to Allah without considering it of any importance, but for which he would have plummeted into Hell.” Al-Bukhari. So, we should control our communication within the limits of Islam and remember that our intentions must be pure and sincere.

*ETHICS OF COMMUNICATION INCLUDE*

*▫️. Communicating kindly and gently.* One of the most beloved qualities of good character to Allah is kindness and gentleness. He sent Prophet Musa and Aaron, peace be upon them, to Fir’aon and He commanded them to speak mildly to him and to begin their invitation to Islam with gentleness, what about your brother?! The Prophet peace and blessings are upon him was insulted and cursed by his enemies but he did not return their curse.

Rather, he showed patience and forbearance and encouraged his companions to be kind. what of you?! *The person that insulted you is in prison for 6 months without judgment* – it is not too late to repent. *▫️. We all love to speak or write but every speaker or writer awaits a trial.* Ibn Abdul Barr reported: Yazid ibn Abi Habib, may Allah have mercy on him, said, “Verily, the speaker only awaits a trial, and the listener only awaits mercy”.

Jaami’ Bayaan al-‘Ilm 625. Mu’adh ibn Jabal reported: The Prophet, peace, and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, you will continue to be safe as long as you remain silent. If you speak, it will be recorded for you or against you.” al-Mu’jam al-Kabeer 16591

Smiling.* Smiling is an instant component to start any discussion positively, brings joy to the giver and receiver, remove any past ill feelings that could be present and it is an act of charity. Abu Dharr said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “Your smiling at your brother is an act of charity.” At-Tirmidhi (1956).
