FAJR REMINDER: WHEN TRUTH DEFEATED FALSEHOOD

Prophet Ibrāhīm (‘Alayhi Salām) challenged the idol-worshippers after the destruction of their idols by telling them that the largest idol had smashed the smaller ones and that they should question it if it could speak. This caused them to reflect for a moment and recognize their own failure and wrongdoing. Allāh (ﷻ) says: “So they turned to themselves and said: ‘Verily, you are the Ẓālimūn (wrong-doers).’” [Sūrah Al-Anbiyā' (21): 64] With this realization, they admitted the helplessness of their idols, saying: “Indeed you [Ibrāhīm] know well that these (idols) speak not!” [Sūrah Al-Anbiyā' (21): 65] In other words, they themselves acknowledged that the idols were lifeless and incapable of responding.
Having exposed the weakness and worthlessness of their false gods, Prophet Ibrāhīm (‘Alayhi Salām) rebuked them with a powerful argument: “Do you then worship besides Allāh, things that can neither profit you nor harm you? Fie upon you, and upon that which you worship besides Allāh! Have you then no sense?” [Sūrah Al-Anbiyā' (21): 66-67] If these idols could neither speak nor bring benefit or harm, then what justification remained for worshipping them instead of Allāh, the One Who created mankind and all that they produce? Their falsehood became completely exposed, and they were left unable to answer him. Allāh (ﷻ) says: “And that was Our Proof which We gave Ibrāhīm against his people. We raise whom We will in degrees. Certainly, your Lord is All-Wise, All-Knowing.” [Sūrah Al-Anbiyā' (21): 83]
When they could no longer defend their beliefs with evidence or reasoning, the idol-worshippers resorted to force and oppression. Unable to overcome the truth, they decided that Prophet Ibrāhīm (‘Alayhi Salām) should be severely punished. Allāh (ﷻ) informs: “They said: ‘Burn him and help your ‘ālihah (gods) if you will be doing.’” [Sūrah Al-Anbiyā' (21): 68] Their intention was to support their powerless idols by taking revenge against the one who had exposed their falsehood.
They gathered a massive amount of wood, dug a pit, and lit an enormous fire whose flames rose intensely. It was a fire unlike any seen before. Allāh (ﷻ) says: “They said: ‘Build for him a building (it is said that the building was like a furnace) and throw him into the blazing fire!’” [Sūrah Aṣ-Ṣāffāt (37): 97] Thereafter, Prophet Ibrāhīm (‘Alayhi Salām) was launched into the fire with a catapult. Yet, despite the terrifying situation, he remained firm and unwavering in his trust in Allāh.
Sa‘īd Ibn Jubayr reported that Ibn Abbās said: “When Ibrāhīm was thrown into the fire, the keeper (angel) of the rain said: ‘When will I be commanded to send rain.‘ But the Command of Allāh was more swift. “We (Allāh) said: O fire! Be coolness and safety for Ibrāhīm! And they wanted to harm him, but We made them the worst losers.” [Sūrah Al-Anbiyā' (21): 69-70] “And there was no fire left on earth that was not extinguished.” Ibn Abbās and Abū Al-Aliyah said: “Were it not for the fact that Allāh said, (wa Salamān—and safety), Ibrāhīm would have been harmed by its coldness.” [Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr]
The idol-worshippers plotted against a Messenger of Allāh, but their scheme failed completely. Allāh protected Prophet Ibrāhīm (‘Alayhi Salām), rescued him from the fire, and turned the plot back against them. Thus, they became disgraced and defeated. Allāh (ﷻ) says: “So they plotted a plot against him, but We made them the lowest.” [Sūrah Aṣ-Ṣāffāt (37): 98]
Dear brethren, this story teaches us the importance of steadfastness upon the Religion of Allāh, especially in times of hardship and opposition. Prophet Ibrāhīm (‘Alayhi Salām) stood firmly upon the truth despite the threats and hostility of his people, and Allāh granted him victory and protection.
I beseech Allāh (ﷻ) to keep us firm upon His Religion, ease our affairs, and grant us steadfastness in all situations. Aameen.
