FAJR REMINDER: NO EXCUSE FOR NEGLIGENCE

We are all aware of the importance of Jumu’ah prayer and that it is Fard ‘Ayn (an individual obligation) upon every able-bodied Muslim man. Likewise, we know the serious consequences attached to abandoning it. Exemptions only apply to those upon whom it is not obligatory, or to individuals engaged in life-threatening and unavoidable duties such as healthcare, security, and similar critical fields that fall under Ḥājah (Need) and Darūrah (Necessity).
Among the Maqāṣid (higher objectives) of Islāmic Jurisprudence is the preservation of life and the prevention of harm. Based on this, there is a legal maxim that states: “Ad-Dararu yuzāl” (i.e., Harm must be eliminated). This means that one’s observance of prayer should not result in danger or hardship for others. Even in such sensitive professions, proper work shifts should be organized to ensure the smooth running of duties while also allowing Muslims the opportunity to observe their prayers.
As for studies or academic activities, they are not valid excuses for neglecting Jumu’ah prayer. What is required from a Muslim is commitment and consistency in observing it. Remember, it is a weekly act of worship and a blessed day that resembles an ‘Eid for the Muslims. Missing a class that was wrongly scheduled during Jumu’ah time does not amount to failure. Remain steadfast, place your trust in Allāh, fear Him, and never become careless regarding your prayers. Allāh (ﷻ) says: “And whosoever has Taqwā of Allāh (i.e. fears Allāh and keeps his duty to Him), He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty). And He will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine. And whosoever puts his trust in Allāh, then He will suffice him. Verily, Allāh will accomplish his purpose. Indeed Allāh has set a measure for all things.” [Sūrah Aṭ-Ṭalāq (65): 2-3]
Furthermore, in schools or institutions where such issues occur, Muslim students and staff should respectfully engage the school management and seek a proper resolution. Muslims should also be selective regarding where they choose to study and work. One should not settle in an environment that places their Dīn (Islām) at risk or hinders them from practicing it correctly and peacefully.
I beseech Allāh (ﷻ) to grant us ease, steadfastness, and success. Aameen.
