ADAILY ISLAMIC REMINDER
Yaum Arba'a | 5th day of Rabee-uthaani, 1448 AH | Wednesday, 16th September, 2026.
A DETAILED EXPLANATION FROM THE QUR’AN AND SUNNAH ON BREASTFEEDING FOR TWO YEARS IN ISLAM
بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
The Qur’anic teaching about two years of breastfeeding is much deeper than simply saying, “A Muslim woman should breastfeed her baby for two years.”
It addresses the child’s welfare, the mother’s role, the father’s financial responsibility, consultation between parents, and the importance of avoiding harm.
ALLAH Azzawajal says:
“Mothers may breastfeed their children for two complete years, for whoever wishes to complete the nursing.”
(QUR’AN 2:233)
Notice something very important. ALLAH Azzawajal mentions:
حَوْلَيْنِ كَامِلَيْنِ
ḥawlayni kāmilayn — “two complete years”
and then adds:
لِمَنْ أَرَادَ أَنْ يُتِمَّ الرَّضَاعَةَ
“for whoever wishes to complete the nursing.”
This establishes two complete years as the full period for those who wish to complete the nursing period.
Does this mean that every Muslim mother is required to breastfeed her child for exactly two years, regardless of her circumstances?
This is where we need to be careful and understand the rest of the verse.
ALLAH Azzawajal continues:
فَإِنْ أَرَادَا فِصَالًا عَنْ تَرَاضٍ مِنْهُمَا وَتَشَاوُرٍ فَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَيْهِمَا
“But if both parents desire to wean the child by mutual consent and after consultation, there is no blame upon them.”
(QUR’AN 2:233)
Therefore, the Qur’an explicitly allows the parents to wean the child before completing two years, provided that the decision is made by mutual consent and consultation.
The verse also teaches us that breastfeeding is not presented as a rigid, one-size-fits-all requirement. Rather, Islam establishes a complete nursing period while allowing parents to make a responsible decision concerning weaning, taking the child’s welfare into consideration.
There is also an important lesson here: decisions concerning a child should not be made carelessly or unilaterally when the Qur’an calls for mutual consent and consultation.
In Shaa ALLAH, tomorrow we will continue by looking at what the same verse teaches about the father’s financial responsibility, the mother’s rights, and the importance of preventing harm during breastfeeding and weaning.
May ALLAH Azzawajal continue to guide us to the truth, protect us from the whispers and influences of Shaytaan, and grant us understanding of His Book and the Sunnah of His Messenger ﷺ.
