بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

Prophet Ayyub (عليه السلام): Patience That Led to Relief

The story of Prophet Ayyub (عليه السلام) is one of the greatest reminders of patience, perseverance and complete trust in Allah.

Ayyub (عليه السلام) was tested with severe hardship. He lost his wealth and suffered tremendous affliction, yet he did not abandon his Lord. His trial became a testimony to the strength of his faith.

The Qur’an records his humble supplication:

وَأَيُّوبَ إِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُۥٓ أَنِّى مَسَّنِىَ ٱلضُّرُّ وَأَنتَ أَرْحَمُ ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ

“And [mention] Job, when he called to his Lord, ‘Indeed, adversity has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful.’”
— Qur’an 21:83

Notice the beauty of his supplication. Ayyub (عليه السلام) did not accuse Allah of injustice. He did not turn his heart away from his Creator. Instead, while acknowledging his suffering, he recognised Allah’s perfect mercy.

Allah then answered his servant:

فَٱسْتَجَبْنَا لَهُۥ فَكَشَفْنَا مَا بِهِۦ مِن ضُرٍّۖ وَءَاتَيْنَٰهُ أَهْلَهُۥ وَمِثْلَهُم مَّعَهُمْ رَحْمَةً مِّنْ عِندِنَا وَذِكْرَىٰ لِلْعَٰبِدِينَ

“So We responded to him and removed what afflicted him of adversity. And We gave him his family and the like thereof with them as mercy from Us and a reminder for the worshippers.”
— Qur’an 21:84

What a powerful ending to a painful chapter!

The One who allowed the trial was also the One who brought the relief. The One who tested Ayyub (عليه السلام) did not abandon him.

Allah also praised Ayyub (عليه السلام) elsewhere in the Qur’an:

إِنَّا وَجَدْنَٰهُ صَابِرًا ۚ نِّعْمَ ٱلْعَبْدُ إِنَّهُۥٓ أَوَّابٌ

“Indeed, We found him patient. What an excellent servant! Indeed, he was one repeatedly turning back to Allah.”
— Qur’an 38:44

This is the real success of Ayyub (عليه السلام): he remained connected to Allah throughout the trial.

What Is the Lesson for Us?

Today, many of us experience different forms of hardship—financial difficulties, illness, family problems, delayed marriage, unemployment, unanswered prayers and other trials.

Sometimes we make du‘a for a few days or weeks and, when we do not immediately see the result we want, we become impatient.

Some people then begin searching for shortcuts. They visit fortune-tellers, soothsayers or people who claim knowledge of the unseen. Others may follow strange instructions involving prescribed sacrifices, offerings or rituals, believing that such practices will quickly remove their problems.

But the believer must remember that the unseen belongs to Allah alone.

Allah says:

قُل لَّا يَعْلَمُ مَن فِي ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ٱلْغَيْبَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ

“Say, ‘None in the heavens and earth knows the unseen except Allah.’”
— Qur’an 27:65

Therefore, when hardship comes, our first refuge should be Allah—not people who claim access to the unseen.

We should make du‘a, seek legitimate means of treatment and assistance, repent from sins, give voluntary charity according to our ability, and remain patient while placing our trust in Allah.

Do Not Give Up Because Relief Is Delayed

A delayed answer to a supplication does not mean that Allah has ignored you.

The story of Ayyub (عليه السلام) teaches us that a believer may pass through a long and painful period before relief arrives.

We should therefore never allow Shaytan to convince us that our situation is hopeless.

Allah says:

وَلَا تَيْـَٔسُوا۟ مِن رَّوْحِ ٱللَّهِ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ لَا يَيْـَٔسُ مِن رَّوْحِ ٱللَّهِ إِلَّا ٱلْقَوْمُ ٱلْكَٰفِرُونَ

“And do not despair of relief from Allah. Indeed, no one despairs of relief from Allah except the disbelieving people.”
— Qur’an 12:87

The believer may cry. The believer may feel exhausted. The believer may experience pain and fear. But he must never lose hope in Allah.

Sometimes the greatest victory is not that the trial ends immediately; it is that the trial does not destroy your relationship with Allah.

Ayyub (عليه السلام) remained patient, and Allah eventually brought him relief.

So, when life becomes difficult, remember:

Your trial has an end, but Allah's mercy has no end.

Keep praying.

Keep trusting.

Keep returning to Allah.

And never exchange the lawful path for a forbidden shortcut simply because the relief seems delayed.

A word is enough for the wise.
