DAILY ISLAMIC REMINDER
Yaum Al-Khamis | 6th day of Rabee-uthaani, 1448 AH | Thursday, 17th September, 2026.
WHY DOES ALLAH AZZA WAAJAL MENTION TWO COMPLETE YEARS OF BREASTFEEDING?
Bismillāhir-Raḥmānir-Raḥīm.
Let's continue with our topic from yesterday's reminder.
The verse establishes two complete years as the period of suckling and nursing. The wording, “for whoever wishes to complete the nursing,” shows that two years represents the completion of the normal nursing period. Classical tafsīr, including the explanation of Ibn Kathīr, understands the verse as directing mothers towards completing the period of suckling for two years.
This is significant because ALLAH AZZA WAAJAL knows the needs of the child better than anyone.
A newborn child is completely dependent upon adults. The mother provides nourishment through her body, while the father is commanded to provide materially for the family.
Therefore, breastfeeding in Islam is not treated as merely a personal lifestyle choice disconnected from family responsibilities. It is connected to the rights and welfare of the child.
And what is beautiful is the balance in Allah's guidance: ALLAH AZZA WAAJAL gives the child a right while also protecting the mother.
Immediately after mentioning breastfeeding, ALLAH AZZA WAAJAL says:
وَعَلَى الْمَوْلُودِ لَهُ رِزْقُهُنَّ وَكِسْوَتُهُنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ
“And upon the father is their provision and clothing according to what is reasonable.”
(Qur’an 2:233)
This is extremely important.
The mother is giving the child nourishment from her own body. Therefore, the father has financial responsibilities towards the mother and the child.
SubḥānALLĀH! What a beautiful balance of rights, responsibilities, mercy, and protection in the guidance of Islam.
Alhamdulillāh for the guidance of ALLAH AZZA WAAJAL.
May ALLAH AZZA WAAJAL continue to guide us, protect our families, strengthen us upon the truth, and safeguard us from every satanic influence.
Āmīn Yā Rabbal-‘Ālamīn.
