Imaam Tirmidhi (RA) has also recorded several narrations of similar meaning from ʿAbdullah Ibn Masʿud (RA) and other Sahaabah-e-Kiraam (RA).

NOTE: There is some disagreement amongst the scholars regarding the number of additional Takbeers. The opinion of the Madhhab of Imaam Abu Haneefah (RA) is quoted here. However, the Imaam leading the Salah should be followed.

There is no disagreement regarding the occurrence and sequence of these Takbeers; the difference of opinion is only concerning their number.

🔸 Make the intention for Salah:

“I am performing Salatul-Eid for Allah (SWT) with six (or any other number of) additional Takbeers.”

Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) said:

“Every action is based on intention, and everyone shall have what he intended.”

(Bukhari)

NOTE: The intention does not need to be uttered verbally or loudly; it is an action of the heart.

It has been stated previously that scholars have differed regarding the number of Takbeers. Therefore, it is advised to follow the number of Takbeers specified by the Imaam leading the Salah.

🔸 The prayer begins with the first Takbeer, i.e. Takbeeratul-Ihraam, followed by reciting Bismillah silently.

Anas (RA) states:

“I performed congregational Salah behind Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam), Abu Bakr (RA), Umar (RA), and Uthmaan (RA), and I did not hear any of them recite Bismillahir-Rahmaanir-Raheem.”

[Sahih Muslim, Hadith 399]

Imaam Tirmidhi (RA) states that the majority of the Sahaba (RA) also used to recite Bismillah softly.

🔸 Then Thanaa should be recited as in the normal Salah.

“Glory to You, O Allah, and Yours is the Praise. Blessed is Your Name, and Exalted is Your Majesty, and there is no deity worthy of worship besides You.”

ʿAbda (RA) reported:

“Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) used to recite loudly these words: Subhaanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika wa tabaarakasmuka wa taʿaalaa jadduka wa laa ilaaha ghayruka.”

(Glory to You, O Allah, and Yours is the Praise. Blessed is Your Name, and Exalted is Your Majesty, and there is no deity worthy of worship besides You.)

Qataadah (RA) informed in writing that Anas ibn Maalik (RA) had narrated to him:

“I observed prayer behind the Messenger of Allah (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam), Abu Bakr (RA), Umar (RA), and Uthmaan (RA). They started the recitation with Al-hamdu lillaahi Rabbil-ʿAalameen and did not recite Bismillaahir-Rahmaanir-Raheem loudly at the beginning of the recitation or at the end of it.”

NOTE: Scholars have explained that the loud recitation by Umar (RA) was for teaching purposes, and in reality, it should be recited silently, as indicated by the later narrations.

🔸 The Imaam will then recite 3 (or the number practised by the Imaam leading the Salah) additional Takbeers.

🔸 The followers will silently recite the Takbeer.

There is no evidence of the followers reciting the Takbeer loudly.

🔸 The followers will raise their hands with each Takbeer and then let them hang by their sides. With the final Takbeer, they will fasten their hands as normal during Salah.

Ibnul-Qayyim (RA) reported that Umar (RA), with his strict adherence to following the Sunnah, used to raise his hands with each Takbeer.

🔸 There are no authentic supplications reported from Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) to be recited between the Takbeers.

🔸 The Imaam will then recite Surah Al-Faatihah, followed by another Surah, and complete the Rakaat as normal.

🔸 In the second Rakaat, the Imaam will recite Surah Al-Faatihah, followed by another Surah, and then perform the 3 (or the number practised by the Imaam leading the Salah) additional Takbeers.

The followers will recite the Takbeer silently, raise their hands, and then let them drop to their sides.

Hazrat Abu Musa Al-Ashʿari (RA) was asked regarding the number of Takbeers that Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) used to say in both Eid prayers.

He replied:

“He (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) used to say four Takbeers in every Rakaat, in the same way as he used to say the Takbeers in Salaatul-Janaazah.”

Hazrat Hudhaifah (RA) also confirmed this practice of Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam).

Imaam Tirmidhi (RA) has also recorded several narrations of similar meaning from ʿAbdullah Ibn Masʿud (RA) and other Sahaabah-e-Kiraam (RA).

🔸 The Imaam will then recite the fourth (or the number practised by the Imaam leading the Salah) Takbeer, and the Salah will be completed as normal.

🔸 The Imaam will then deliver the Khutbah after the Salah, while the followers listen to it.

It is reported in Musnad Ahmad from the hadeeth of Ibn ʿAbbaas (RA), who testified that:

“The Messenger of Allah (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) prayed before the Khutbah on Eid, then he gave the Khutbah.”
