FAJR REMINDER: HEALTH AND REWARD IN ONE STICK!
Rabīʿ Al-Akhīr 13, 1448 (25-September-2026)
What if a simple stick could earn you reward, cleanse your mouth, strengthen your commitment to the Sunnah, and be an act that pleases your Lord?
This is the Siwāk—a simple Sunnah that many people overlook despite its tremendous virtue.
Among the recommended acts associated with Wuḍū’ is using the Siwāk. The Prophet (ﷺ) used it regularly, particularly before Ṣalāh, and he repeatedly encouraged its use because of its cleanliness and virtue.
Abū Hurayrah (Raḍiyallāhu ʿAnhu) reported that the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) said:
“Were it not that it would be difficult for my nation, I would have commanded them to use the Siwāk before every prayer.”
In another narration, the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“Were it not that it would be difficult for my nation, I would have commanded them to use the Siwāk with every Wuḍū’.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 887, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 252]
The Siwāk is traditionally obtained from the Arāk tree (Salvadora persica). It has been used for centuries as a natural means of cleaning the mouth.
(1) THIS SUNNAH BRINGS REWARD
ʿĀ’ishah (Raḍiyallāhu ʿAnhā) reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“The Siwāk is purification for the mouth and pleasing to the Lord.”
[Sunan an-Nasā’ī 5]
Thus, using the Siwāk is not merely about keeping the mouth clean. It is also an opportunity to follow the Sunnah and seek the pleasure of Allāh.
(2) IT SUPPORTS ORAL HYGIENE
Research on Salvadora persica suggests that Siwāk contains compounds with antibacterial and other antimicrobial properties. When used properly, it can help remove plaque and support oral hygiene.
Some studies have also found benefits for gum health, although Siwāk should be used properly and should not necessarily be viewed as a complete replacement for modern dental care.
(3) IT HELPS CLEAN THE TEETH
The fibres of the Siwāk can mechanically remove food particles and plaque from the teeth. Its natural components may also help remove some surface stains and leave the teeth feeling cleaner.
(4) IT HELPS FRESHEN THE BREATH
By cleaning the mouth and reducing some of the bacteria and food debris that contribute to unpleasant odours, Siwāk can help keep the breath fresh.
The scholars have mentioned several occasions when using the Siwāk is especially encouraged, including before Ṣalāh, before Wuḍū’, before reciting the Qur’ān, after eating foods that leave an odour in the mouth, upon waking, and when entering the home.
And when Jumuʿah comes, endeavour to use the Siwāk, as it is among the Sunnahs associated with Friday.
Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī (Raḍiyallāhu ʿAnhu) reported that the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) said:
“Ghusl on the day of Jumuʿah is obligatory for every male who has reached puberty, and using the Siwāk and applying perfume if available.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 880]
The Siwāk is a small stick, but it carries a great Sunnah. It gives us an easy opportunity to care for our mouths while reviving a practice of the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ).
Use it with sincerity, consistency, and love for the Sunnah—and seek the reward of Allāh through it.
I beseech Allāh (ﷻ) to be Merciful to us, help us revive the Sunnah of His Messenger (ﷺ), and accept our acts of worship.
Āmīn.
